COUPLES COUNSELLING

We believe that there are three parts to every couple’s conflict story: each partner has their own side, and then there is the heart of the matter. All our therapy services are available virtually (by video or phone) or in person.

Is this your marriage or relationship?

  • You used to be happy and in love, but now it feels like work.

  • Most important conversations end in an argument.

  • Trust has been broken, and resentments have set in.

  • You often feel misunderstood or ignored.

  • Physical and emotional intimacy has diminished.

FAQs

According to PsychologyToday, the success rate for couples counselling is between 50 and 75%, although this percentage depends on many factors.  For example, willingness of each partner to commit to improving the relationship, commitment and seriousness to attending therapeutic sessions and completing homework, levels of self-awareness and openness to change, the ability to have empathy for each other and to work as a team to resolve challenges, rather than seeing the other as the enemy, and many more.

The good news is that all the success factors mentioned above are learnable and supported in session.

Coaching you in these skills and facilitating meaningful dialogue to resolve challenges is the role of the counsellor. The reason you’ve been struggling is that it’s exceedingly difficult to manage constructive conversations when your emotions are high. The counsellor helps regulate emotions and guide the conversation toward constructive ends.

A session for couples counselling, typically lasts one hour but longer sessions can be arranged, if necessary.

Anyone in a partnership (whether married or not) can engage in couples counselling, (also known as marriage counselling). Couples counselling is for people (LGBTQ++ or straight, cis or other genders) experiencing challenges or wanting to enhance any kind of committed relationship. You don’t need to be living together to benefit from couples’ counselling. Couples’ counselling can even help friends resolve conflict in their friendship.

If you want to

  • resolve dysfunctional communication and conflict styles
  • learn productive ways to communicate
  • rebuild the foundation of the relationship

Then couples’ counselling is for you.

Many couples also struggle with financial issues, whether this be different money management styles, unhealthy spending habits, a lack of money coming in compared to expenses, or debt.

If this sounds familiar, you and your partner probably argue about money frequently, causing a stressor on your partnership.

Couples counselling can help you and your partner learn how to effectively communicate about money issues together so as to not lead to an argument each time, as well as discuss strategies to overcome it.

Arranging other helpful resources can also be discussed, such as financial advisors to help the partner learn how to more effectively handle money, ultimately decreasing the stress on the marriage.

A session for couples counselling begins with the therapist reviewing confidentiality and intake forms.  Once these documents are reviewed and signed, the session begins.

The therapist provides a safe and non-judgmental space and support, as well as skills teaching for the couple to:

  • explain–without interruption–what is on their minds, and learn how to more effectively listen to each other
  • understand what each person wants and does not want in the relationship, as well as what is and is not working currently between them
  • better understand each other’s conflict style and its impact on arguments
  • understand each person’s communication style in order to improve day-to-day conversations and minimize minor relationship distress
  • process and move forward from resentments and past hurts

The cost of couples counselling at the KSRC is $150.00 before tax.  As with all of our services, clients are encouraged to confirm coverage details with their private extended health care benefit program.
